Advice for prospective PhD students
If you have a four-year undergraduate degree in electrical engineering (or
related discipline) and are interested in a PhD in signal processing, speech
processing, mental state recognition, automatic task analysis, genomic signal
processing or related topics in my
lab, please look through the information below and contact me to express
your interest. The lab has a strong history of research excellence, including
several successful PhD completions in recent years. I am very happy to put you
in touch with our current PhD students, so you can find out more about what to
expect. Please just contact me and we
can discuss further !
The University of New South Wales
UNSW is home to Australia’s
largest Engineering faculty, which is
consistently ranked highly both within Australia and internationally (UNSW rankings
and Engineering
rankings).
International students
The majority of our PhD students are international students, and
applying for tuition and stipend scholarship support is a first priority. The
main scheme is International
Research Scholarships, which can provide funding for both tuition and
living expenses. There are two rounds per year (check the site again later if
the most recent round has just closed).
For Chinese students, you may be eligible for the China Scholarship Council (CSC) Award. If you
are successful in your application for CSC, then UNSW has further information for
CSC students. You should also be sure to contact me as additional
funding support is usually available for CSC holders.
Local students
Students holding Australian citizenship or permanent residency should
apply for Domestic
Research Scholarships. There are two rounds per year (check the site again
later if the most recent round has just closed).
Additional scholarship support
Local and international students studying my lab may be eligible for additional
scholarship funding support from National ICT Australia. For this scheme
you should apply first to the above International or Domestic Research Scholarship
scheme (whichever applies to you); this is the normal process for NICTA
scholarships. Most of my current students hold these additional scholarships,
which offer approximately the maximum scholarship support, plus some travel
support. Many also do a little casual teaching to further supplement their
scholarships.
More information ?
General information on the process of applying for research studies can
be found here. I’m
happy to guide you through the application process. In any case, you will need
to seek my agreement to supervise you as the first step in the process.
